“Sculpture is what you bump into when you back up to see a painting.”
- Barnett Newman
This past Saturday, as part of its celebration of Tina Turner Heritage Days, Brownsville, TN unveiled a 10-foot statue honoring their native daughter. The statue itself has been met with, to put it mildly, “mixed reviews.” I can't say I'm a fan of it on first viewing, but like any piece of art, decide for yourself.
Regardless, whatever honors she receives, I say, “Bravo!” What an icon she was. I don't think you can explain or quantify what she had. It was some combination of grace, class, charm, beauty, sex-appeal, raw energy and talent that had not existed in nature before she arrived. I know for sure, it never will again. That's too bad, because we could sure use a little of what she had in the world now.
