4-29-26 - Power Ballad

“Dewey, I'm cut in half pretty bad.”
               - Nate Cox/Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

First off, I want to note that today is Willie Nelson's 93rd birthday.  A happy day to him.  I will add that I've never really been a fan of Willie's music. That's blasphemy to many, I know, but it's just a fact.  Sorry.  That doesn't mean that I don't appreciate and applaud his place as an icon of American music and culture.  And, I fully respect and salute the many timeless songs he's written and that he and others have recorded.  Hail Willie for all of that.  His music has just never been my thing.  You understand. You have some of those artists, too, no doubt.

On another topic, I see that John Carney has another movie coming out in late May.  I'm excited about that.  Carney (I've referenced before) is the Irish writer and director of four music-centric movies, two of which are among my all-time favorites.  Actually, his Sing Street is my favorite, and Once is in the Top-12.  His films are all love letters to music in one way or another.  This newest called Power Ballad, stars Paul Rudd who plays a washed up wedding singer and Nick Jonas plays a fading boy band star.  What happens from there?  We'll see.  Jack Reynor is also in the cast and he's usually worth the price of admission.  I'm counting on this movie to be good.  I need it to be good.

Speaking of the good ones, here's a list of my baker's dozen of favorite music movies (non-documentaries):

What am I missing?

  1. Sing Street
  2. Inside Llewyn Davis
  3. School of Rock
  4. Once
  5. Wild Rose
  6. Whiplash
  7. Singles
  8. Song Sung Blue
  9. Walk Hard
  10. Yesterday
  11. High Fidelity
  12. This is Spinal Tap
  13. A Complete Unknown
