"Touring is the only thing I know. I'm not a rocket scientist, what else am I going to do?
- Eddie Money
Today is the birthday of Eddie Money (1949). He is no longer with us, having passed to rock and roll heaven in 2019. Man, I've always had a soft spot for Eddie. I thought he had one of the great and distinctive rock voices.
He was born Edward Mahoney in Manhattan, New York, and like his father, became a NYC cop. That was short-lived, though. They wouldn't let him grow his hair long, and pretty quickly he quit to peruse a music career. It worked out pretty well.
Eddie had some iconic radio hits and if a person never went any deeper than those, they're still well served. But, like countless artists, his catalog is much deeper than the “Hits.”
As with many others in that line of work, Eddie fought the demons of addiction, and complications from those got him in the end. We saw him with Bad Company in 1999 at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was no longer a young lion, but he was still a rock and roll star.
