There is a theory that says the rise of atheism coincides with the invention of the streetlamp. As people left the country and moved to towns and cities and theirs nights were lit artificially, they no longer looked to the heavens. They lost their capacity for awe and wonder. They no longer looked at the stars. Maybe so.
