“The minute I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show — and it's true of thousands of guys — there was a way out. There was a way to do it.”
- Tom Petty
On this day, January 30, in 1969, The Beatles played together for the last time. It was an impromptu, unannounced gig on the roof of their record label's offices in London. Once it was discovered, chaos ensued and traffic came to a standstill as people looked up from street level and from nearby rooftops and windows. The Beatles were joined by Billy Preston on keyboards for the 42-minute set. When they ended, John Lennon famously said, “I'd like to say ‘thank you’ on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition.”
So now it's time for a monumental challenge. Name your favorite Beatles song. Oh, my.
Of the dozens that I could choose, it comes down to Penny Lane and the one I'm going with.
