A quick internet search reveals that there are 2,300 songs with a female name in the title. A similar search for songs with dude names reveals, well, quite a few less. I guess one reason would be that for the longest time most songs were written by men, so naturally, they're named for the object of male desires. But, also, aren't female names just more beautiful to say? Aren't they more poetic sounding with their lovely syllables: Allison, Caroline, Elizabeth, Sophia, Juliet, Jessica, Lorraine, Rosanna, Melissa, Ophelia, Grace, Charity, Mercy, Faith, Hope. Male names, on the other hand, not so enchanting: Fred, Floyd, Frankie, Stan, Jack, Jerome, John, Kevin, George, Chuck…I'm a little selective in my comparisons, but you get the point - male names - not quite the same lilt.
So, girls have it, hands down on aesthetically pleasing names in songs, and boy, didn't the Beatles sure make hay with them: Prudence, Rita, Lucy, Julia, Jenny, Madonna, Eleanor, Martha, Sadie and Jane. The Rolling Stones have a Jane, too, along with an Angie and a Ruby. As far as Janes go, there are 61 titles alone with Jane in them: Sweet Jane, Sweet Gypsy Jane, Crow Jane, The Diary of Jane, Hannah Jane, Jane the Killer, Mary Jane, and Jane Jane to name a few.
Time to name names, then. Here of a few lesser knowns that I will submit for approval. How about anyone else?
